Toughglass

Toughglass was established in 1889 to produce toughened safety glass for the construction and transport industries.

In 1997 Crescent Capital invested in the business to finance entry into the curved safety glass market. The group produced both flat and curved safety glass from its two plants in Kilkeel Co Down, servicing customers throughout the British Isles and Europe.

By 2007, the group had sales of circa £7m per annum and employed over 100 staff, however the recession of 2008 claimed the business when a combination of collapsed local demand and price pressure from cheaper imports rendered the business unviable. The assets were acquired by a larger glazing group however production ceased altogether at the Kilkeel site in 2010
