Crescent Capital II LP backed OTN specialist acquired by Xilinx Inc.

Omiino Ltd. (Belfast) were backed by Crescent Capital II LP in a strategic investment aimed at facilitating high-potential growth for this innovative optical transport network (OTN) technology solutions company.
Omiino’s acquisition for an undisclosed multi-million dollar deal underwrites Xilinx’s commitment to ensuring that technology responds to the new realities in the market and enables its customers to bring innovative new products to emerging markets in a space of a few weeks.

The rapid increase in video sharing and internet mobile platforms over wireless and wired networks globally is creating an insatiable demand for bandwidth and forces optical communications equipment vendors to rapidly “deliver high levels of flexibility, integration and performance without raising power consumption or costs into their optical platforms,” said Krishna Rangasayee, Corporate VP and General Manager of Xilinx’s Communications Business Unit.

Current global economics now calls for programmable chips over the use of expensive application-specific integrated circults (ASIC’s) and application-specific standard products (ASSP’s). The higher costs and risks of using application-specific devices can only be justified for a very short ’shortlist’ of ultra-high volume comodity products.

The current business environment is characterised by spiraling complexity, tight market windows and fickle consumer demand. When this cocktail of pressures is added into engineering facing capped development budgets, escalating ASIC and ASSP non-recurring engineering costs and risks it demands innovation.

Mr.Rangasayee added that, “As part of Xilinx’s recent acquisition of Omiino Ltd., we have created a new OTN (Optical Transport Network) Solution Delivery Centre that will include all of Omiino’s deep OTN expertise plus their existing portfolio of OTN solutions and OTN development platforms to give our customers the most optimized and cost effective solution for their systems.
